About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Customs Manager to oversee and manage all customs compliance and international trade operations. This role is critical in ensuring that all import and export activities adhere to applicable regulations, minimise risk, and optimise efficiency across the supply chain.
You will act as the subject matter expert on customs procedures, working closely with internal teams, freight forwarders, and regulatory authorities to ensure smooth cross-border movement of goods.
Key Responsibilities
- Customs Compliance & Governance
- Ensure full compliance with UK and international customs regulations, including HMRC requirements.
- Maintain and update internal customs procedures in line with legislative changes.
- Manage customs audits and act as the primary point of contact for regulatory authorities.
- Ensure full compliance of our ETSF.
- Import & Export Operations
- Oversee the preparation and submission of customs declarations (import/export).
- Ensure accurate tariff classification, valuation, and origin determination of goods.
- Monitor shipment flows to prevent delays and resolve customs-related issues promptly.
- Duty & Cost Management
- Identify opportunities for duty savings through regimes such as Inward Processing, Customs Warehousing, and Free Trade Agreements.
- Validate duty payments and ensure accurate reporting of VAT and other taxes.
- Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and logistics providers.
- Collaborate with procurement, finance, and operations teams to align customs strategy with business goals.
- Provide expert advice to internal stakeholders on customs-related matters.
- Process Improvement
- Develop and implement efficient customs processes and systems.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce delays and costs.
- Support digitalisation and automation of customs activities where applicable.
- Training & Leadership
- Lead and develop a team of customs specialists
- Deliver training to internal teams on customs compliance and best practices.
- Stay up to date with changes in international trade regulations and communicate impacts to the business.
Key Requirements
- Proven experience in a Customs Manager, Senior Customs Specialist, or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of UK customs regulations (HMRC) and international trade compliance.
- Experience with customs software systems (e.g.,CNS CDS, CHIEF, or equivalent).
- In-depth understanding of:
- Tariff classification (HS codes)
- Rules of origin
- Incoterms
- Customs valuation methods
- Demonstrated experience managing audits and dealing with regulatory bodies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Professional certification in customs or international trade.
- Experience with Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) accreditation.
- Knowledge of EU and global trade frameworks.
- Background in logistics, supply chain, or freight forwarding environments.
