Commercial Lending– Special Assets Manager

Function Description
Provides commercial loan workout services and risk management oversight for the credit union, managing a portfolio of troubled/distressed loans. The primary duties of this position include monitoring and enhancing credit administration strategies that minimize the credit union’s potential loss on each assigned credit through negotiating satisfactory repayment schedules, obtaining additional collateral and/or restructuring facilities as appropriate. This position works closely with management, commercial lending staff, participants and outside legal counsel to protect the credit union’s interests.

Reports to: SVP – Commercial Lending
Supervises: N/A
Contacts: Credit union members, other credit union departments, credit union officials, Commercial Lending and Operations department members, external financial service providers, internal and external legal counsel, CUSO employees, participant Credit Union personnel, examiners.
Qualifications/Requirements
Education: A bachelor’s degree with emphasis in business or finance, or equivalent work experience.
Experience
- Five (5) to seven (7) years commercial special assets/workout experience and other related experience required
- Five (5) years commercial real estate underwriting and other related experience strongly preferred
- Strong experience in analyzing financial statements, balance sheets and tax returns for all business types
- Experience with general accounting practices as they relate to loan grading, payment of fees and expenses for each assigned loan,
- Experience in risk reporting, including but not limited to risk ratings, portfolio monitoring metrics and trends, and board policy and guideline recommendations strongly preferred
- Extensive knowledge of business laws as well as commercial and regulations related to commercial lending, strong working knowledge of regulatory compliance, accounting and finance, and asset/liability management
- Knowledge of Fair Debt and Bankruptcy laws
- Knowledge and understanding of commercial appraisal methods for all types of collateral, focusing on commercial real estate
- Knowledge of state and federal compliance governing credit union policies and procedures
- Commercial Participation servicing experience preferred
- Extensive experience successfully working with personnel in a variety of lending functions and grade levels
Skills
- Excellent written and oral communication, negotiation, computer and credit analysis skills and demonstrated ability to make effective decisions
- Capable of maintaining and overseeing accurate and effective quality control systems for commercial loans.
- Proficient at managing the consistency of processes and procedures as it relates to the review and resolution to graded loans
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in verbal and written form.
Equipment: Personal computer running the Windows operating system, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, telephone and system printers, video display terminal.
Essential Functions
- Provides a valuable and enjoyable experience to both internal customers and members during interactions. Consistently suggests ways to improve the member/customer experience through improved processes and technology.
- Responsible for operational excellence and regulatory compliance as it relates to commercial loans.
- Review current account status, to include but not limited to: Commercial loan documentation and collateral perfection, loan payments, payment of real estate or other taxes, title policy, business loan agreement and required metrics, existing action plan, default or other letters, and risk rating
- Analyze financial statements (personal and entity), balance sheets and tax returns for appropriate loan modifications, including reserve accounts, additional collateral, paydowns or others changes that improve credit risk and minimize potential losses.
- Evaluate collateral value and possible liquidation options, considering market environment and state collection laws.
- Propose and/or evaluate member modification requests, with back up analysis, for SVP or Loan Committee approval, in compliance with credit union policies and procedures, including but not limited to foreclosure or litigation.
- Participate in evaluating risk rating including making revision recommendations, maintaining Graded Loan Reporting, documentation, and tracking to ensure compliance with Safety and Soundness practices of the Credit Union.
- Responsible for ensuring that the assigned portfolio, including loan files and reporting is audit ready and meets the standards outlined in companies’ policy.
- Monitor and manage the timeliness and quality of business and commercial loan reports to ensure the portfolio remains in good standing.
- Lead inter-departmental projects as assigned for the Commercial Lending department and serve as department representative on other department’s projects and teams.
- Work with participating Credit Unions to facilitate the supply of all required source documents, including annual review of document and source documents for assigned graded loans; obtain approval for modifications as required by participation agreements
- Occasional driving to vendor locations or loan closings may be required.
