Role Summary:
We are seeking a Compliance Officer, Trade Surveillance with hands-on expertise to lead our global trade surveillance programme across physical and financial energy markets. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, operation, and continuous improvement of surveillance systems and controls, ensuring regulatory compliance with MAR, MiFID II, REMIT, and global standards across the FCA, NFA, CNMV, and DFSA.
Key Responsibilities:
Surveillance Operations
• Review, investigate, and document alerts from SteelEye across voice and electronic trading.
• Escalate suspicious behaviours, including potential market abuse (e.g. spoofing, layering, wash trading, front-running).
• Conduct daily monitoring of trading in gas, power, FFAs, and commodity derivatives, including pre- and post-trade analysis.
• Monitor for REMIT violations including potential insider trading and capacity hoarding in wholesale energy markets.
Framework Ownership
• Own and maintain the trade surveillance policy and procedures, ensuring alignment with MAR, REMIT, NFA Rule 2-9, CNMV Circulars, and DFSA Conduct of Business requirements.
• Calibrate and optimise alert parameters in SteelEye to reduce false positives and improve detection accuracy.
• Lead internal surveillance committees and provide regular MI to senior management and the Board.
Regulatory and Compliance Interface
• Act as primary SME on market conduct for internal and regulatory reviews, audits, and investigations.
• Support regulatory reporting and audit trails under MiFIR, EMIR, and position limits regimes.
• Coordinate with compliance counterparts in the UK, UAE, US, and Spain to ensure cross-jurisdictional coverage and consistency.
Data & Tech Integration
• Partner with IT and SteelEye to ensure data quality, completeness, and timeliness across voice, chat, trade, and order flow.
• Lead UAT and business testing for system upgrades and enhancements.
• Develop automation and logic enhancements for alert review and case management.
Training and Awareness
• Provide training to front office, compliance, and risk staff on market abuse risks and escalation protocols.
• Embed a culture of surveillance awareness within broking and trading desks.
Required Experience & Skills:
• 7+ years’ experience in trade surveillance, market abuse detection, or regulatory compliance.
• Strong knowledge of FCA MAR, NFA Rule 2-9, REMIT, MiFID II, and DFSA COB.
• Detailed understanding of energy and commodity markets – especially gas, power, and FFAs.
• Hands-on experience with SteelEye or similar platforms.
• Experience working with voice and electronic communications surveillance.
• Proven experience in data management, reconciliation, and exception handling across trade and order datasets.
• Excellent analytical, investigative, and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently and present findings at senior level.
