Vessel Chartering Specialist - Dubai
Job Summary: The Vessel Chartering Specialist is responsible for the profitable employment of managed/operated vessels or for securing suitable vessels for cargo transportation on behalf of clients. This involves overseeing the entire chartering process, from market analysis and negotiation to contract management and operational follow-up, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and optimizing vessel utilization and revenue.
Key Responsibilities:
Chartering Activities:
- Manage all aspects of vessel chartering, including identifying suitable vessels (AHTS, PSV, DSV, barges, dry bulk vessels, etc.) for various cargo types and project requirements (offshore installation, construction, logistics, commodities).
- Negotiate charter party agreements (voyage, time, bareboat) with shipowners and brokers, ensuring favorable terms and conditions.
- Draft, review, and execute robust charter party agreements, ensuring compliance with internal standards and legal requirements.
- Liaise extensively with internal teams (marine operations, legal, insurance, procurement) and external partners (shipowners, brokers, agents, clients) to align vessel operations with project objectives and client needs.
- Coordinate with agency and operations on joint projects.
Market Analysis & Business Development:
- Monitor and analyze global and regional shipping market conditions, freight rates, and trends to identify new chartering opportunities and optimize strategies.
- Calculate voyage estimates, assess potential returns, and assist with budgeting and commercial tender preparation.
- Identify and develop new chartering accounts and opportunities, evaluating potential returns and developing strategies to secure business with existing clients and attract new ones.
Operational & Post-Fixture Support:
- Provide day-to-day support to the Commercial/Chartering Department.
- Monitor vessel performance, technical suitability, and HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) compliance throughout operations.
- Ensure the timely mobilization, demobilization, and meticulous cost control of all chartered vessels.
- Conduct background checks and maintain demurrage sheets.
- Handle full post-fixture operations and account tracking, including demurrage/dispatch calculations and analysis of voyage results.
Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure compliance with international shipping regulations, including customs, safety requirements (SOLAS, MARPOL, IMCA), and UAE maritime law.
- Contribute actively to the project's vessel strategy, including availability analysis, market intelligence, and risk mitigation.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping & Logistics, Business, or a related field is often preferred. Professional certifications like the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) Diploma are highly valued.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2-5 years of proven experience in vessel chartering, marine logistics, or offshore operations, ideally within the oil & gas, subsea, dry bulk, or project & heavy lift sectors.
- Demonstrated experience in contract negotiation, cost management, and operational follow-up.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Solid understanding of various charter party types (Voyage, Time, Bareboat).
- Familiarity with vessel specifications and crucial marine regulations (IMCA, SOLAS, MARPOL).
- Proficiency in demurrage and dispatch calculations.
- Knowledge of global trade lanes and port information.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills:
- Strong analytical abilities to interpret complex data, identify trends, and make informed business decisions.
- Ability to think critically and solve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with clients, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
- Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with clients, brokers, and other stakeholders.
- Other:
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) is essential; knowledge of other languages (e.g., Arabic, Russian, a European language) can be an asset.
- Proactive, solution-oriented, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Familiarity with project-driven environments and dynamic planning constraints is highly valued.
- Proficiency in relevant software and industry tools.
