Role Overview:
Morgan Philips Specialist Recruitment is presently representing a multinational, world leading service company operating within the energy industry in their search for a part time Sanctions and Trade Compliance Legal Counsel.
Reporting to the Head of Legal based in the UK, this role requires a high calibre legal professional with sanctions and trade compliance experience. The is a part time role and the successful candidate could join on either 2 or 3 days per week.
The post holder will advise on economic sanctions and related regulatory compliance. The role involves interpreting and advising on international sanctions regimes, supporting business operations, managing regulatory risk, and engaging with regulators where necessary. The Legal Counsel will work closely with other members of Group Legal, company Export Control and Corporate Compliance teams, local sites and key stakeholders to provide timely advice and guidance on relevant matters.
The right candidate is technically excellent, will excel at understanding summarising complicated subjects, and enjoys working on new challenges. The role requires an experienced and commercially astute individual with a sanctions law background who will be key member of Group Legal. As a hands-on and trusted advisor, the successful candidate will excel in participating in a high performing team and demonstrate a collaborative and inclusive style.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide strategic legal advice, challenge and guidance on sanctions matters relevant to global operations, including:
- Advising on global economic sanctions regimes (e.g., OFAC, UK OFSI, EU, UN)
- Assessing sanctions risks related to transactions, operations, supply-chain, counterparties, jurisdictions, and products
- Providing legal guidance on licensing, exemptions, and reporting obligations
- Drafting and reviewing internal sanctions policies, procedures, and controls for the Group and its global operations.
- Supporting investigations into potential sanctions breaches and recommend remediation
- Liaising with regulators and external counsel on sanctions matters
- Delivering training to legal, compliance, and business teams on sanctions developments
- Monitoring regulatory changes and advising on their impact to the business
- Supporting counterparty onboarding and due diligence from a sanctions perspective
- Be an active part of a high performing, respected legal team delivering added value legal services, advice and guidance to the Group to enhance and protect the interest of the business.
- Ensure the business is compliant with legal regulatory requirements and standards to safeguard the business and support decision making.
- Produce accurate and timely legal reports to the Head of Legal.
About You:
- A UK qualified lawyer with significant sanctions and trade compliance experience.
- In-depth knowledge of OFAC, EU, and/or UK sanctions frameworks
- Experience advising financial institutions, multinational corporations, or regulated entities
- Excellent analytical, drafting, and communication skills
- Knowledge and experience in regulated industries with emphasis on technology and energy.
- Technical and practical knowledge of legal services in an international setting beneficial.
- Interest in learning about ESG matters.
